Teaching writers' workshop is the best thing I do all day. It is powerful to help young children to become writers. Great books, intentional instruction, high expectations, and wide open spaces. Think Katie Wood Ray. Think Ralph Fletcher. It all comes together here.

Same philosophies extend to instructional coaching. It's about clarity of intention, reflection, and ownership. Working side by side. Building communities of learners (of all ages).

#SOL18 Day 15: #Walkout

Side by side

Voices magnified

By silence

Opting in to democracy

Keenly aware

Sincerely affected

Collectively moved to action

Shared grief

And hope

For the future

So proud of these kids

  1. I am also proud of these young people who are speaking out about something that they care about. I hope they are listened to, and I hope they continue to stand up for what they believe. A good poem to encompass all of that.

  2. While our district was supportive of student choice, our building administrator of school didn't encourage actions. Made me sad as we as an elementary school could have done something to show empathy and unity in an appropriate way.

  3. It's interesting, because we had quite a few teachers who were worried that students would treat the walk out as an excuse to go outside and be silly. The absolute opposite was true. Students were so respectful and serious about it. It was powerful to see them gathered together, knowing they were part of something big happening across the country.
